Currently Ontario residents pay provincial land transfer tax on the purchase of real estate. To date, only Toronto charges an additional municipal land transfer tax. The Toronto municipal land transfer tax was decreed in 2008 under the then mayor of Toronto, David Miller. The Toronto land transfer tax essentially doubles the tax a home buyer has to pay inside the Toronto municipal area just for the right to buy a home. See the Table above.
The provincial government has approved that other municipalities can now also charge a municipal land transfer tax. This would mean that an Ontario resident would then have to pay more than $10,000 just for the right to own a basic home!! This is unacceptable and there is something you can do about it. Stop this tax grab and go to donttaxmydream.ca for information and sign the petition to say no to the tax.
